Instrumentation: In first half a capella choir alternates
with strings; in second half strings and choir come together
Comment: There’s an African/Gospel flavor to the
choral writing, at least partly from the pentatonic mode. There’s
also the influence of the Kronos string quartet, who did a wonderful album
of African works. While comfort can be found in simple rhythms and non-challenging
harmonies, it can also be a source of joy and energy.
