Instrumentation: Solo cello and choir (largely 3-voice
texture); tutti in coda
Comment: We return to the quiet of the beginning movement,
but now with hope and light rather than fear and darkness. This movement
contains elements of prophecy, promise and prayer. As we leave the exalted
atmosphere of “Glory to God,” and enter the everyday world,
we can still be at rest. Just as the cello never leaves the choir, so
God never leaves us.
